Active Therapy

Active therapy uses movement to encourage building strength, range of motion, flexibility, stability, balance, endurance, proper biomechanics, muscle memory, form, and postural improvements to return as close to pre-injury status as possible. An initial assessment is completed to design and implement a specialized program to meet the client's individual needs. The program will focus on pain management strategies, educating the client on his/her specific needs and why the client is completing the prescribed exercises in the program. The program will start with direct sessions with a Registered Kinesiologist and progress towards an independent program through acquired skills and education to achieve the program goals.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy embraces the same principles as active therapy, but in a pool or body of water. This type of treatment is usually conducive to low impact, weight restrictions, extreme pain, and range of motion limitations. It is a lighter impact workout that tends to work initially on pain free movement patterns, range of motion, and overall muscle strengthening/endurance. Hydrotherapy is usually a stepping stone to move into active therapy in the gym.

Collaborative Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy

The cognitive therapy utilized with SHIFT Rehab Services is based on Kit Malia's Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy and the cognitive triangle associated with it. It encompasses re-learning and teaching techniques and foundations: attention, visual processing, information processing, memory, and executive functions.

Working in collaboration with Occupational Therapists, Case Managers, mental health specialists and brain injury specialists, we are able to carry out the prescribed cognitive treatment plan under the guidance of a trained professional in Cognitive Therapy.

The Cognitive Rehabilitation Program is specialized for each client and dependent on their needs for traumatic brain injuries, acquired brain injuries, concussion, and/or mental health conditions.

Community Re-Integration

Community re-integration can be a large part of the recovery and rehabilitation process. Re-integrating a client into the community can be necessary to ensure a safe and successful recovery, or further enhance their rehabilitation program outside their home or comfort levels. This service is generally utilized in coordination with cognitive therapy and for conditions where memory, processing, or attention have been affected. Client's who have suffered from anxiety and PTSD have also benefited from this service.

Community Re-Integration can include, but is not limited to:

  • Learning to use public transit
  • Pedestrian safety and signs
  • Functional training in the community such as making a list, going to a store, shopping, money management, and so on
  • Re-learning or introducing a client to their new surroundings, facilities, community, and how to get to them
  • Time management and help learning how to get to appointments
  • Personal independence
Work Conditioning/Hardening

After a client has completed, or is close to completion of an active rehabilitation program, a return to work plan may be incorporated if a client has been unable to work or has worked at a limited capacity. A work conditioning/hardening program ensures the client is able to perform the duties and requirements set forth by the employment position and employer to facilitate a return to work. A Functional Capacity Evaluation or work demands analysis is completed and the kinesiologist designs a program to enable the client to work towards returning to full function and abilities in their pre-injury employment.

This involves the client's full multidisciplinary team along with the employer to ensure proper safety, progressions, communication, and protocols are incorporated to achieve success.

Activation Program

An activation program involves specially designed goals that incorporate motivation, enjoyment, activity, and involvement. This program can be utilized for client's suffering from signs and symptoms relating to chronic illness and/or mental health including, but not limited to, anxiety, PTSD, depression, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and many more.

Home Program/ Functional Training

A home program can incorporate functional re-training, as well as, active therapy in the home to build strength, balance, stability, and improve mobility and abilities.

Functional Training is teaching, re-training, and/or modifying abilities to be able to complete activities of daily living (cooking, completing errands, cleaning, climbing stairs, etc.) and return to regular function and independence.

Coordination of the two works towards safety in the home, decreased risks of falls and to prevent further injury. Returning to daily activities is a key component to restore pre-injury capabilities.

Stroke Recovery

Stroke recovery involves reactivation and mind-body connection. The program can include gait retraining, flexibility, balance, coordination, muscle activation, and much more dependent on each client's individual needs.

Private or group stroke recovery classes can be taught in one hour increments. The classes focus on low impact exercises, unilateral and bilateral strengthening, functional movement patterns, balance, and coordination, as well as, assisted exercises utilizing various pieces of equipment specific to stroke rehabilitation.

Exercise Therapy For Cancer Patients

Exercise can help reduce cancer risk, decrease side effects of treatment, and improve the effectiveness of cancer treatments. Talk to a certified exercise professional to learn how exercise can support you and your body in cancer prevention, during a cancer diagnosis, or in survivorship. Research has shown that exercise can decrease muscle atrophy, reduce cancer-related fatigue, decrease anxiety, depression, lymphedema, as well as, improve/increase health related quality of life, physical function, bone health, stress, and sleep. Read more on exercise guidelines for cancer survivors here.

Yoga

Connect your mind, body and spirit through movement, breath, mindfulness, and meditation. Yoga can build strength through movement, supports the mind through mindfulness and presence, and helps the body find balance through breath and a connection with self. Through yoga, you will learn how to relax and connect your body mind and spirit. SHIFT Rehab offers 1:1 yoga sessions or class/group sessions/rates.

Personal Training

Whether you would like to build strength, run a marathon, modify habits, or learn about the exercise essentials, SHIFT Rehab Services can help you reach your goals. SHIFT’s Registered Kinesiologists have an extensive background in personal training and can help navigate through the large amount of data and research with our client-centered approach. • Did you know you no longer need a referral to receive kinesiology services after April 1, 2019? You are entitled to 12 pre-approved kinesiology sessions as part of your part 7 benefits with ICBC. All you need is your claim number and claims handler name and contact information.
  • Part 7 benefits by ICBC covers payment of medical expenses, rehabilitation expenses, wage benefits, home making benefits, and in the event of death, funeral expenses and loss of support benefits.
  • Starting April 1, 2019, ICBC will pay an increased amount for your treatment so that you do not need to pay out of pocket for your treatment sessions.
  • SHIFT Rehab does not charge user fees on top of the standard treatment rates set forth by ICBC. There is no fee to you and the fees are directly billed to ICBC.
  • Evidence has shown that the sooner you start an active rehabilitation program after a motor vehicle accident (MVA), the greater the prognosis and return to pre-MVA status.
